Y5's and Kindergarten
Children at this age learn music through play, sing and dance. The students enjoy being sleeping bunnies, snowflakes, ice skaters, kangaroos, a robot, a car, etc. Through these songs and games the students learn concepts such as steady beat, soft and loud, low and high, fast and slow, smooth and bouncy music. We also learn to echo speech, rhythmic patterns, chants, finger plays and simple songs. Puppets, stories, and instruments often enhance the concepts being taught. Students are learning to move independently around the room and maintain their own personal space. Each week students review concepts such as alphabet, numbers, rhymes and story order as we sing together. In addition, students are reviewing how to take turns, make a circle, and follow directions. This is a wonderful age to experience music, when it comes so naturally and all enjoy it. We have a blast in music and I love sharing that time with your child.
Studies have shown that a child’s brain strongly develops spatial reasoning, math, reading and language when they experience music at a young age. Some things you can do to support your child’s musical growth are go to a concert, musical or play. Sing with your child in your daily life. Play music at home (maybe even homemade instruments) and talk about what you hear. Put on some fun kids tunes and let them dance around. Enjoy music together! Mrs. Ropp
